Following months of engineering, testing, upgrade drills, and community coordination, the Mesa Upgrade is now live. Mesa elevates what Mina can do today, while laying stronger ground for what comes next: blocks are produced twice as fast, zkApps gain significantly more capacity, and nodes can now handle hard fork upgrades automatically.

What Changed with Mesa

Mesa introduces five key improvements aimed at reducing developer friction. Together, they target three core areas: speed, application capacity, and protocol evolution.

Slot time is reduced from 180 seconds to 90 seconds. Cutting block time in half delivers faster transaction confirmations and a noticeably more responsive network for developers building on Mina.

More Room for zkApps. With the network moving faster, Mesa also gives zkApps more room to work with:

  • More On-Chain State. zkApp accounts can store more fields directly on-chain, reducing the need for complex off-chain workarounds.
  • Higher Event and Action Limits. Complex operations that previously required multiple approvals can now be executed in a single transaction.
  • More Account Updates per Transaction. Developers can bundle significantly more state updates per transaction without splitting application logic.

Automated Hard Forks. Hard forks can now run in an automated mode where block producing nodes prepare and execute upgrades independently. By reducing manual coordination overhead, Mesa allows for a faster pace for future protocol upgrades.

How We Got Here

Mesa is the result of months of collaboration across the whole ecosystem. Every improvement went through Mina’s governance process, giving the community direct oversight. From proposal reviews and testnet drills to final mainnet execution, Mesa truly reflects the combined effort of o1Labs engineers, node operators, and community contributors.

Mesa is not just a feature release: it’s a stronger, more stable base to build from. 

With faster block times and expanded capacity now live, attention is already turning to what comes next. Work is underway to scope Mina’s next upgrade, with early priorities focused on further security optimizations, memory enhancements, and significant fill rate improvements.

Mina remains committed to its core idea: using programmable cryptography to let developers build applications where computation can be proven, rather than simply trusted.
