What is the MIP process? Why does it matter?

The Mina Improvement Proposal (MIP) process is the primary mechanism for protocol decision making and recording the design choices that shape Mina Protocol. This process ensures a structured, transparent, and participatory approach, empowering community members to propose, discuss, and decide whether to implement these changes through a community-wide on-chain vote. By engaging in the MIP process, the community collectively shapes the evolution of Mina, making every voice heard and fostering a truly decentralized governance model.

Why change it now?

Over the last few years, Mina’s ecosystem has grown substantially and an increasing number of companies and individuals are joining and contributing to the ecosystem. Consequently, there is also a rising need to develop Mina’s governance to support this growth and help to realize Mina’s vision of a future powered by participants so that its decision making processes remain effective and aligned with the wishes of the community.

This proposal is part of a broader plan outlined in the previous blog post, ‘Next Steps for Mina Protocol’s Governance‘, which was discussed with the community in several town halls, fireside chats, and surveys.

Proposed changes

Upgrading the MIP process would include major changes based on the feedback we received so far from the community, including:

  • Creating new categories for future MIPs: engineering, economics, and governance.
  • Introducing new roles and responsibilities to review MIPs and assist MIP authors throughout the process.
  • Enhancing transparency by introducing mass deliberation tools and public debates.
  • Establishing clear guidelines for implementing future MIPs.

The expectation is that these changes will empower community members to present and discuss proposals, making Mina Protocol’s governance system more transparent, effective, and aligned with the community.

About Mina Protocol

Mina is the world’s lightest blockchain, powered by participants. Rather than apply brute computing force, Mina uses advanced cryptography and recursive zk-SNARKs to design an entire blockchain that is about 22kb, the size of a couple of tweets. It is the first layer-1 to enable efficient implementation and easy programmability of zero knowledge smart contracts (zkApps). With its unique privacy features and ability to connect to any website, Mina is building a private gateway between the real world and crypto—and the secure, democratic future we all deserve.

Building trustworthy and trusted communities
Summary  Crypto systems are ‘trustless’ to the extent that they do not need trusted intermediaries to implement and enforce their rules. However, trust is not eliminated altogether since we still need to trust various groups of people and organisations who are responsible for the protocol and defining its rules. This raises the question: how can […]
